Italy has strong political, economic and cultural relations with Lebanon. Bilateral ties have been further reinforced in the aftermath of 2006 War.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, on the occasion of his visit to Lebanon on 7 April 2012, reiterated Italy’s commitment to promote durable peace and prosperity in this country. Italy considers that Lebanon has a vital role in upholding stability and democracy in the entire region.

Italy therefore supports the unity, sovereignty and independence of Lebanon and works to achieve the full implementation of UNSCR n.1701 and the other UN resolutions concerning Lebanon.

Italy is also following with great attention Lebanon’s progress in the path toward internal stabilization and the consolidation of democratic institutions. In this regard, Italy strongly encourages the dialogue between all Lebanese parties as well as inter-religious dialogue.

The Italian Government maintains a prominent role within UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon). On 28 January 2012, an Italian officer, Maj. Gen. Paolo Serra, took office as Force Commander of UNIFIL.

Since the adoption of UNSCR n.1701, Italy provided the largest contingents of UN peacekeeper deployed below the Litani River. The Italian contingent, at present strong of 1100 units, cooperates with the Lebanese Army in order to preserve stability in Southern Lebanon, and works with the Lebanese authorities to deliver essential services to the population. The Italian Army also carries out significant de-mining activities.

Italy is Lebanon’s second largest commercial partner, and the first European one, with a strong presence in key sectors such as machinery, construction materials and fashion. Italian large firms give a significant contribution to the expansion of Lebanese infrastructure (i.e. energy plants and roads).

Italy is providing a strong contribution to the development of Lebanon, making a sizeable effort on the front of humanitarian aid and reconstruction. In the period 2006-2011, the Italian Cooperation pledged over 250 million Euro (equivalent to nearly 350 million USD) in grants and soft loans, becoming one of the largest donors to Lebanon. Italian aid, in close coordination with national and local authorities, addresses the needs of the population all over the Lebanese territory.

Italy also aims at strengthening its significant cultural ties with Lebanon and promotes the diffusion of the Italian language and culture.
